Change

As previously noted, one of my favorite blogs is Perspectives by Larry Hollon, Chief Executive of United Methodist Communications. Several of his recent posts have cited change as it relates to communication - Changes in Media, Changing Relationships, Changing with the Times and Change or Perish. Hollon asks the important question, "How does an organization or a corporation formed under older values and management structure adapt to the new realities?" This is not only the challenge of the United Methodist Church in general, but also to the local church as well. I think I will continue to ponder his reflections.

The curch as the Body of Christ will always be, but the institutional church as currently structured and functioning may not survive. In fact, it should not survive, because it is no longer effective in fulfilling the mission as given to us By Christ: To go and make disciples (of Jesus Christ) of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. We are not even very good at making disciples of those who have already joined the institution. The church must be transformed and reclaim its mission. We must acknowledge the new realities, understand them, and evolve our infrastructure and our processes such that we are intentionally focused on proclaiming the Good News and winning souls to Christ, then helping them to grow into disciples.

Thabk you for reminding me of Larry Hollens' blog and for continuing to challenge us to reflect on our purpose as a local congregation.
